The short version
If you want a small, dedicated sensor that’s easy to sleep in and takes its own overnight readings, the Oura Ring is one of the most established options. If you’d rather not buy a ring, or you already wear an Apple Watch, Vital gives you readiness and the rest of your day in one iPhone app.

Where Oura is stronger
A ring is easy to forget you’re wearing, which suits sleep tracking well. The Oura Ring takes its own readings day and night, including heart rate, temperature and blood oxygen, so its Readiness score has overnight body data to work with. Oura quotes up to six to nine days on a charge, depending on ring size and use.
Oura has also built a wide set of features around the ring: women’s health insights, cardiovascular age, daytime stress, an AI companion called Oura Advisor, and Meals, which estimates the make-up of a meal from a photo or a description. It works on Android as well as iPhone, and Oura publishes how it measures sleep and checks its accuracy.
Where Vital is different
Vital doesn’t ask you to buy a ring. It reads Apple Health, so it can use an Apple Watch if you have one, and it still works if you don’t. Without overnight heart readings, Readiness is estimated from last night’s sleep, a short morning check-in and your recent training, and it’s marked as an estimate. See readiness without an Apple Watch for how that works.
Alongside Readiness, Vital has pages for Sleep, Heart, Activity, Training, Nutrition, Mood, Stress, Body and Cycle, with logging, workouts, widgets and Live Activities. It learns how much sleep you seem to need and suggests a bedtime.
On cost, Vital Club and Oura Membership are both £69.99 a year in the UK, but Oura also needs the ring, which starts at £399. Vital processes your health data on your iPhone and never sends it to analytics.
Using both
You don’t have to choose. Oura’s help centre says it can write sleep, including sleep stages, and heart rate to Apple Health, and Vital reads sleep from Apple Health. Oura’s list of data it writes to Apple Health doesn’t include HRV, so it’s worth checking what arrives on your iPhone before relying on it.
Which might suit you
- Oura may suit you if you’d like a discreet sensor for sleep, don’t want to wear a watch in bed, or use Android.
- Vital may suit you if you already have an iPhone, perhaps with an Apple Watch, don’t want to buy a ring, and want readiness alongside training, nutrition, mood and the rest in one app.
In Vital
Vital gives you one daily Readiness score from Apple Health, with or without a wearable, read against what’s usual for you.

Do I need an Oura Membership?
Oura says that without a membership you only see your three daily scores, for Readiness, Sleep and Activity. The membership unlocks the rest of the app and costs £5.99 a month or £69.99 a year in the UK.
Can I use an Oura Ring and Vital together?
Yes. Oura can write sleep and heart rate to Apple Health, and Vital reads sleep from Apple Health. Check which data types you have allowed in the Health app.
Do I need an Apple Watch to use Vital?
No. Vital works with or without an Apple Watch. Without overnight heart readings, Readiness is estimated and marked as an estimate.
Is Vital’s Readiness the same as Oura’s Readiness?
No. Each app builds its score in its own way, so a number from one can’t be compared with a number from the other. Both are estimates, not medical tests.
