The short version
If you wear an Apple Watch every night and mainly want recovery to guide your training, Athlytic is a focused and inexpensive choice. If you don’t always wear a watch, or you want readiness next to nutrition, mood, body and cycle in one app, Vital covers more ground.

Where Athlytic is stronger
Athlytic costs less: £26.99 a year against £69.99 for Vital Club. It’s also deeply tied into Apple Watch, with a watch app, complications, live heart rate zones during workouts and structured interval sessions you can follow on your wrist. You can ask Siri for your Recovery, Sleep and planned workouts.
For training, Athlytic goes further than Vital. Target Exertion gives you a daily range that fits your Recovery, workout suggestions say what to do and for how long, and its trends include training load and a training load ratio. Its developer declares on the App Store that it collects no data from the app.
Where Vital is different
The biggest difference is what happens without a watch. Athlytic’s listing says an Apple Watch is needed for most features, because HRV and resting heart rate come from the watch. Vital works with or without one: without overnight heart readings, Readiness is estimated from last night’s sleep, a short morning check-in and your recent training, and it’s marked as an estimate. See readiness without an Apple Watch for more.
Vital also covers more of daily life outside training. Alongside Readiness there are pages for Sleep, Heart, Activity, Training, Nutrition, Mood, Stress, Body and Cycle, with logging, workouts, widgets and Live Activities. Both apps set a sleep target and suggest a bedtime. Vital processes your health data on your iPhone and never sends it to analytics.
Which might suit you
- Athlytic may suit you if you wear an Apple Watch every night, care most about recovery and training, and want the lower price.
- Vital may suit you if you don’t always wear a watch, or want readiness alongside nutrition logging, mood, body and cycle in one app.
In Vital
Vital gives you one daily Readiness score from Apple Health, with or without an Apple Watch, read against what’s usual for you.
